In early 1976, a local petition was made to re-zone a parcel of land adjacent to Stormy Lake for the purpose of establishing a trailer park and campground. Fearing that lake access would be involved, property owners Ray Schaus, Dick Denis, Margaret Habener, Ed Hamming, and Dorothy Karstadt rallied other Stormy Lake property owners to attend a special zoning meeting at the Conover Town Hall on July 1, 1976. The Zoning Committee was impressed that approximately twenty Stormy Lake property owners attended and voiced their objection. The petition was denied.
The Stormy Lake people who attended this meeting expressed the desire to form an association of property owners. Again, through the efforts of Ray and Bernice Schaus and the others mentioned above, a constitution and by-laws were drafted. At a meeting called for May 29,1977, forty Stormy Lake property owners met, agreed to form an association, and adopted a proposed constitution and by-laws. On July 3,1977, Ray Schaus was elected the first president.
The Association has championed water quality, boat landing updates, and loon habitat/monitoring. The group has actively engaged the Town of Conover, the DNR, and Vilas County. Although the property owners remain a diverse mix of people, representing multiple points of view, ages, geographic histories, backgrounds, and interests, a strong majority has always chosen to join and support the Association.
Membership benefits include participation in the Stormy Lake Association annual meetings, access to the SLA directory/cdocuments, voting privileges, and invitations to social events throughout the year.
